There is some truly incredible content on TikTok. Some of the most popular and well-liked videos on the platform defy expectations, transcending the supposedly “limited” format of short-form video to produce creative and imaginative pieces of work. Many TikTok videos would stand next to professionally-produced endeavours as art, so browsing the platform is about much more than simple mindless entertainment.
With that in mind, there might be some TikTok videos that you want to bring to others’ attention or that you want to download and keep for later. So, how would you achieve that? The answer might be a little more complicated than you would think. In some ways, downloading and sharing TikTok videos are relatively simple processes, but in others, it’s not that straightforward. Here’s how to download and share videos on TikTok.
Downloading videos
Obviously, you will need a TikTok account yourself before you download any videos from the app. This is because TikTok prompts you to create an account before you can actually engage with any of its functionality, so if you’re hoping to grab some videos without actually participating, you might struggle.
There are three different ways you can download TikTok videos. The first is by far the simplest and most straightforward. All you need to do is navigate to the video you want to download and long-press anywhere on the screen. You’ll be shown three options: Save Video, Add to Favourites, and Not Interested. Tap the first option, and the video will be saved to your phone’s local storage. Pretty simple, right? You’ll be able to find the video in your phone’s standard Gallery app, which is probably Google Photos if you’re on Android and the rather prosaically-named Photos on iPhone platforms.
The second way you can download a video is via the Share dialogue, which is appropriate given our next tutorial. First, locate the Share icon to the right of the main video screen. It’s underneath the Likes and Comments count and looks like an arrow pointing to the right. Tap this, and you’ll see a number of different platforms to which you can share the TikTok video. You’ll also see several different functions underneath those platforms, one of which is “Save video”. Tap that, and you’ll save the video to your phone. As above, it’ll be in your default Photos app.
Finally, there’s a third way to save videos to your phone. This one is a little more murky, and we’d urge extreme caution if you intend to use it, as it could be going against the TikTok user’s wishes if you do it. However, there are several third-party programs out there which will allow you to download TikTok videos even if the original video’s creator has made the video unavailable for download.
You can find these programs yourself with a quick Google search, but again, we’d urge caution if you intend to go down this route. Remember that if you absolutely don’t want your videos to be downloaded by strangers, the only way you can guarantee this is to set all of your content to private, so only friends can see it.
Sharing videos From TikTok
Let’s say you’ve seen an amazing video on TikTok and now you want to share it with your friends. Most social media platforms have built-in share buttons you can use to send the content over various different apps, right? Well, it won’t come as a surprise that TikTok has the exact same functionality. Let’s take a look at how to share videos on TikTok.
First, you’ll need to find the video you want to share and watch it. Not too difficult! As above, underneath the video’s Likes and Comments counters (and the chance to do so yourself), you’ll find the Share button, which is a right-pointing arrow. Beneath that arrow, you’ll also find the number of users who have shared the video at that point, which is an interesting metric.
Tapping the Share button will take you to a new window, where you’ll see all the various platforms on which you can share a video. These include Snapchat, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram, as well as any other communication apps you have installed that support this functionality. Your default SMS app should also support TikTok sharing.
Beneath these apps, you will also find other functions including the built-in Duet feature, the ability to share TikTok videos as GIFs, and the chance to save the video to your favourites. For our purposes, we simply need to tap one of the apps to which we want to share the video. Once you tap it, you’ll see a dialogue showing you more options including who you want to share it with. Et voila – it really is that simple! TikTok is designed to be intuitive and easy to use, so it’s no wonder that sharing the joy of these videos with your friends is as straightforward as it is.
